Becoming a licensed electrician in Australia opens doors to a stable, rewarding, and in-demand career. Whether you’re just starting out or have years of experience and want to formalise your skills, getting your electrical licence is essential for working legally and safely across the country.
Here’s everything you need to know to become a licensed electrician in Australia.
Step 1: Complete an Approved Electrical Apprenticeship — or Fast Track with All Skills College
The most common way to become a licensed electrician is by completing a Certificate III in Electrotechnology Electrician (UEE30820) through an electrical apprenticeship. This takes about 4 years, combining theory and practical training.
BUT — if you already have 4 or more years of industry experience, you don’t need to start from scratch.
At All Skills College, we help experienced workers fast-track their electrical licence through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) and our accelerated trade pathways.
📍 Whether you're just beginning your journey or you’ve been on the tools for years — we’ve got a tailored path to suit you.

Step 2: Pass a Capstone Assessment or Licensing Exam
At the end of your apprenticeship (or RPL process), you'll need to complete a Capstone Assessment or licensing exam to show you can work independently and safely. This includes:
- Understanding of AS/NZS 3000 (Wiring Rules)
- Electrical installations and testing
- Fault finding and troubleshooting
- Safety protocols and compliance
Step 3: Apply for Your Electrical Licence
Each state and territory has its own licensing body. After completing your training and passing your assessment, you can apply for your licence through:
- NSW – NSW Fair Trading
- VIC – Energy Safe Victoria
- QLD – Electrical Safety Office (ESO)
- WA – Energy Safety WA
- SA – Consumer and Business Services
- TAS – CBOS
- ACT – Access Canberra
- NT – NT Worksafe
You’ll need to submit:
- Qualification evidence (Certificate III)
- Assessment results
- ID documents
- Application form and fee
Step 4: Renew Your Licence & Stay Current
Electrical licences must be renewed every 1–5 years, depending on your state. Some jurisdictions also require CPD (Continuing Professional Development) to ensure you stay compliant with changing industry standards.
Why You Must Be Licensed
Doing electrical work without a licence is illegal in Australia. It can:
- Lead to hefty fines
- Invalidate your insurance
- Risk serious harm or death
A licence gives your clients peace of mind, boosts your earning potential, and keeps you covered legally.
